Opened in February 2000 on the outskirts of the ancient African city of Marrakech, Amanjena (‘peaceful paradise’) is the first Aman resort on the African continent. Marrakech was brought to radiant life by the brilliance of 11th century Almoravid irrigation. Water is also the unifying element of Amanjena. Central to the resort is a bassin, an ancient irrigation pool, inspired by Marrakech’s 12th century Menara Gardens. From Amanjena’s elemental plaza, channels flow to two long canals. These public pools feed the resort gardens composed of olive and citrus trees, soaring date palms, orange-flame bougainvillea, hibiscus and pomegranate.

Accommodation:
Amanjena has 18 rose-toned Pavilions, six Pavilions Bassin, eight Pavilions Piscine, six two-storey Maisons and Maisons Jardin and a two-bedroom Al-Hamra Maison, all situated around the resort’s central bassin.

Each air-conditioned Pavilion opens to a grand multi-faceted dome. Its graduated ceiling is done in stuc Venetian, which glows in harmony with the room’s pale-peach walls. Their lustrous finish is of tadlekt, a treatment originally applied to waterproof hammam (steam bath) walls. Under the dome, each Pavilion bedroom is centred by a king-size bed balanced by Berber carpets and brass lanterns. An arched fireplace warms Marrakech’s winter nights and furnishings include a day bed and a desk finished in Moroccan leather coupled with a cherry-wood chair in reverse leather. Bathrooms feature a stepped and colonnaded bathtub of Ouarzazate green marble and a soaking tub, along with twin vanities, soaring mirrors, twin dressing areas and a separate shower. Sliding glass and cedar doors lead to the pavilion’s private garden courtyard and views to the golf course or the olive groves. All pavilions enjoy a pillared minzah (gazebo). The Pavilions Bassin enjoy sweeping views to the central irrigation pool, whilst the Pavilions Piscine (pool pavilions) have their own 25sqm heated pool and an extended private garden. A large lounging couch, flanked by black lanterns, rules the courtyard. A zellij fountain is recessed into the terracotta-tiled floor. Chaise longues and maillechort candle lanterns lend a mood of pure Moroccan indulgence. Total surface area of each Pavilion and Pavilion Bassin is 175sqm, including exterior space. Pavilions Piscine have a total surface area of 360sqm, including pool, terrace and gazebo. For families or couples travelling together, the courtyard’s facing cedar doors can be opened to the adjacent pavilion.

Amanjena’s six, two-storey, two-bedroom Maisons rise seven metres from floor to ceiling in a variation of the Moroccan town house, with trines of second-floor windows looking inward. The living area, located on the main floor, features an arc-cut fireplace, a zellij wall fountain and a small bathroom. The self-contained guest bedroom, with its queen-size bed, bathroom with separate shower and toilet, change area and separate courtyard entrance, is also located on the entry level. Upstairs, the bathroom is defined by marble columns, domed shower and toilet rooms and a pillared, green-marble tub. The bedroom comes with a king-size bed and divan. Each maison courtyard enjoys its own private, heated swimming pool, most with views directly onto the bassin. Total surface area of Maisons is 338sqm. Two of the six maisons come with garden courtyards. These Maisons Jardin feature a fireplace, a full minzah, a butler’s pantry and a shade tree. Total surface area of a Maison Jardin is 563sqm. Each Maison and Maison Jardin can be connected with one Pavilion Bassin in the same way. Amenjena’s largest accommodation is the Al-Hamra Maison, which has an extensive pavilion with a large indoor living and dining area with an open fireplace and its own private butler service. Two bedrooms are linked by an open passageway to the shared garden where there are two minzahs (gazebos) for dining and lounging and a private 36sqm heated pool. Total surface area of the Al-Hamra Maison is 750sqm.
